Mahram Requirement — 2021 Update
What changed and what it means for UK sisters planning Umrah
Women Can Now Perform Umrah Without a Mahram
In 2021, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah officially removed the requirement for women to have a mahram (male guardian) to perform Umrah. This applies to women of all ages — the previous restriction limiting independent travel to women over 45 has been fully abolished.
Women may now perform Umrah without a mahram, provided they travel as part of an organised group through a licensed travel agency. Perfect Umrah & Travels is a fully licensed IATA-certified agency (No. 27350050), and our women-only groups fully satisfy this requirement.
For Hajj, the mahram requirement still applies in most circumstances. See our Hajj packages for current guidance, or WhatsApp us for personalised advice.
