Practical Guidance

Tips for Elderly Pilgrims

1
Travel October–February

Temperatures of 25–30°C are far easier to manage than summer's 42–45°C. This is the safest window for elderly health.

2
Book a Hotel Within 200m

Short walking distances make all the difference for those with joint pain, fatigue, or limited mobility. We prioritise proximity.

3
Consult Your GP First

Get a full check-up and bring written confirmation of medications and fitness to fly. Carry all medicines in original packaging.

4
Stay Hydrated Always

Zamzam water is freely available inside the mosque. Drink regularly — dehydration is the most common issue for older pilgrims.

5
Use Off-Peak Prayer Times

Visit Masjid al-Haram at off-peak times (mid-morning, early afternoon) to avoid the biggest crowds and reduce physical strain.

6
Wear Comfortable Footwear

Supportive, well-fitted sandals or shoes are essential. Avoid new footwear — blisters and foot pain are the top physical complaint.

Common Questions

Elderly Umrah FAQ

Yes — millions of elderly pilgrims perform Umrah each year safely. With the right preparation, a suitable package, and appropriate medical clearance, Umrah is accessible to pilgrims of all ages. The Saudi authorities also provide wheelchair services, golf buggies, and designated accessible areas around Masjid al-Haram. We arrange personalised support from the moment you leave home to the moment you return.

Masjid al-Haram has extensive wheelchair facilities. Free wheelchairs are available at all gates. Wheelchair-pushers (hired locally for ~£15–25/day) are readily available near the mosque. The Tawaf area has a dedicated wheelchair circuit on the first floor (ground-level), allowing those who cannot walk the lower tawaf to complete it more comfortably. We pre-arrange wheelchair support through our local Saudi ground team.

Yes — our elderly and mobility packages include door-to-door minibus collection from your UK home, wheelchair-accessible airport assistance, special assistance through departure and arrival airports, and private transfer from Jeddah/Madinah airport directly to the hotel. We coordinate with airlines for Special Assistance (WCHR/WCHS/WCHC) seating and boarding.

We recommend hotels within 200–300m of Masjid al-Haram for elderly pilgrims — ideally on the same level as the mosque entrances to minimise walking. Our top choices include hotels in the Abraj Al-Bait complex (50–100m from the Haram), hotels on King Abdulaziz Road, and hotels in the Ajyad area. All are verified for lift/elevator access and accessible bathrooms.

No separate visa category exists for elderly pilgrims — the standard Umrah visa process applies. However, we recommend including a letter from your GP confirming fitness to travel, a full medication list, and travel insurance that covers pre-existing medical conditions. Our visa team (Hafiz Amir) will guide you through the complete documentation process.

October–December and January–March are ideal for elderly pilgrims. Temperatures in Makkah average 25–30°C in these months, compared to 40–45°C in summer. Fewer crowds outside of Ramadan also mean less physical strain. We strongly advise against summer Umrah for elderly or health-compromised pilgrims.

Absolutely — and we encourage it. Adult children accompanying parents qualify for the same package pricing. We also offer Mahram packages for women who require a male guardian. For elderly couples, we arrange double or twin rooms in accessible hotels with no supplement on most packages.

Travel insurance is not technically mandatory for an Umrah visa but is essential for any pilgrim, especially elderly travellers. Saudi Arabia does not have a reciprocal health agreement with the UK. Medical costs in Saudi hospitals can be very high. We partner with specialist Islamic travel insurance providers who cover pre-existing conditions and emergency medical repatriation.
